Summery: What if the Admiral hadn’t needed to show up?

 

 Prologue

 

                Silently the ship glided through space, through nebulas and star systems, each lifeless and empty.  The dead region provided a plethora of resources, everything a ship could need, but the fact remained that the lifeblood of the ship, its crew, was drowning in despair.  Four months and not a trace of another sentient species.  The ship was built by a culture of explorers, and four long months had yielded nothing worth exploring.  Each star system and dust cloud visited exposed nothing unusual, nothing unexpected.  Slowly, the valiant crew, survivors of malfunctions, aggressors, and powerful enemies were being beaten by the mundane; Voyager’s crew was tired.  They were weary of their journey, and the prospect of 60 more years of lonely toil.
